Free Things To Do Across the Midwest (That Are Actually Free)
"Free" does a lot of heavy lifting in event listings. Some of it is genuine — street festivals, park concerts, community days. Some of it is free entry to a field where everything inside costs money. Here's how the free category actually breaks down.
Genuinely free: street festivals and neighbourhood days
Neighbourhood festivals, parades, art walks and summer concert series are the reliable core of the free category. No gate, no ticket, and street parking if you arrive before the crowd. These are the ones worth planning around.
Free with an asterisk: museum free days
Most regional museums run a free admission day, usually monthly and usually mid-week. Special exhibitions are typically excluded, and the free day is the busiest day of the month. Go at opening or in the last ninety minutes.
Free entry, paid everything
County fairs and food festivals frequently advertise free admission and then charge for parking, rides and tastings. Budget for it or bring cash and a limit. It's still often the cheapest full day out available.
The cheapest way to find them
Filter by cost before you filter by category. A free event you'd never have searched for beats a paid one you talked yourself into.
